Reception

Weekly Update - Friday 10th October 2025

Summary of this week:

Another busy week in Reception started with our autumn walk around the school grounds looking for signs of the season.  Fortunately for us Storm Amy had deposited plenty for us to find!  We used our finds to make autumn wreaths, create place and arrange pictures and have even weighed leaves, acorns, conkers and sticks to find out which are heavier and which lighter.

We are working hard in phonics to recognise the twelve letters (graphemes) that we have learned so far and say the sounds (phonemes) that they make and the children have enjoyed their new routine of sharing a book together in a small group.

The children are continuing to become confident in their new school environment and we are so impressed with the huge learning curve they have embraced this first half term.

Our learning after half term:

Maths

We will be exploring how numbers are composed, for example that 3 can be composed of 1 and 2

Literacy

We will be sharing the story ‘Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and learning to retell it and listen for and identify rhyming words.  We will create a story map together to help us to sequence the story and the children will have the opportunity to make their own.

Phonics

This week we will be teaching the sounds ck, e, u and r and the tricky word I

Notices & Reminders:

Next week as a part of our Jigsaw (Personal Social Emotional Development) lesson about responsibility we are going to try to grow cress.  If you have any yoghurt pots that you could send our way we would really appreciate it.

Final call for a family photograph if you haven’t already sent one in!  The children love to look at them and tell their friends and us about their lovely families!  Please email a phot across and we will happily print it.

We are looking forward to meeting with you next Tuesday and Wednesday for parent consultations to talk about how the children have settled.  Please do sign up for a ten minute slot if you haven’t yet.
